Kartini Day is celebrated annually on April 21 in honor of Raden Ajeng Kartini, a pioneer of indigenous women’s rights and Indonesia’s first feminist. At the Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel in Bali, we celebrate this special day as a tribute to the women who fought for their rights in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
While the women of today are different from those of Kartini’s time, they are no less powerful and bold. To inspire our female employees to be more active and confident, our Human Resources team has organized a modest Kartini Day event that goes beyond mere celebration. It is a reminder that women and men are equal and should be treated as such.
The event featured a fashion show contest that showcased traditional Indonesian costumes and Balinese dance performances. The highlight of the evening was a live performance by our female DJ Laura Husten. All the talents were performed by our hotel staff. The event was held at our beautiful oceanfront location, Beach Gate, and started at 6 p.m. Guests were treated to delightful light bites during the coffee break while enjoying the sunset and the stunning Indian Ocean views.
Caroline Andarini, the Assistant Human Resource Manager, explained the purpose of the celebration: “We want to encourage the Kartini character in our female employees. This event is not only for the front liners but also for the back liners to showcase their brilliance, behavior, and beauty.”
The winner of the fashion show contest was determined by the judges’ scores based on their answers to a questionnaire, their performance, and the best costume. The winner was awarded a special gift by our judges. The evening was fantastic, serving as a reminder for us all to keep the spirit of women alive.
